BRENTWOOD — Liberty High wrestling coach Greg Chappel told his team before Wednesday night's dual meet against Freedom that the visiting Falcons had one thing that the Lions should want — the Bay Valley Athletic League title.

Thanks to a timely pinfall by heavyweight Ryan Korner, the Lions got exactly what they wanted.

Leading by just one point with three matches to go, Korner picked up a big six points for the Lions when he managed to get Nick Pierce on his back to score a pinfall win and send Liberty to an eventual 37-30 win over defending league champion Freedom.

With the win, Liberty (4-0) clinched the BVAL title.

From the beginning of the night, it looked like Freedom (3-1) might be a bit overmatched. David Klingsheim won by technical fall at 119 pounds, Anthony Thurgood won 14-8 against Dominic DiMercurio at 125, and Nico Serrano beat Zach Hansen 15-5 at 130 to give Liberty a 12-0 lead.

Freedom climbed back into things in an instant, though, when 135-pounder Josh Cohen, trailing 15-10 at the time, managed to turn Cody Krimm to score a pinfall victory in the third period, making the score 12-6 Liberty.

"Honestly, everybody did a great job," Chappel said. "The only match that kind of sickened us a little bit was Krimm's match. That kind of kept them in the match, I think, because we were up big in that one."

The Lions picked up another win at 140 pounds thanks to a 16-6 win by Jesse Baldazo, but a

good effort at 145 by Ryan Smith meant Freedom's most heralded wrestler, Nick Waldrop, managed only a 7-6 win for just three team points. Wins by David Rios (by pinfall) and Chris Leyen put Liberty up 25-9 heading to the heavier weights.

That's where Freedom took over. Gabe Tulchinsky picked up an 8-3 win at 171 pounds before Justin Baffico and Jeremy Parsons scored back-to-back pinfalls to make the score 25-24 Liberty heading into the heavyweight match. That's when Korner gave Liberty the victory it desperately needed.

"Everything matched up the way it should have been, and we knew it was going to come down to one match," Falcons coach John Parsons said. "That was the one match we needed, and they got it."

Josh Fio sealed the victory with a pinfall over Joey Viola at 103 pounds. Freedom's Roman Garcia won by forfeit at 112, making the final score 37-30.

***This is why it was so loud in the gym and why He-man was so excited after he finally won!
